The Golden Healer: Why Calendula is the Heart of My Workshop
There is a flower I have come to cherish above almost all others. You’ll recognise its bright, sun-drenched petals immediately: Calendula, often known as the "Pot Marigold."
I have been in love with this botanical since the very beginning of my business. I was initially drawn to its vibrant colour, but it was a personal crisis that truly solidified my faith in its power.
My Story: The Night the Pain Stopped
Years ago, I struggled with cracked heels so deep and painful they kept me awake for several nights. I tried every commercial cream I could find, but the relief was fleeting. Out of desperation, I reached for a jar of my own Calendula Balm.
I massaged a generous layer into my heels, put on a pair of thick cotton socks to lock in the moisture, and went to bed. I woke up the next morning, amazed—the sharp, stinging discomfort was gone, and the skin was already beginning to knit back together. For the first time in days, I had slept through the night.
That experience transformed me from a maker into a true believer.
The Botanical History of the "Sun's Flower"
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) has a history as rich as its golden petals. Historically, it was known as the "poor man's saffron" because its dried petals were used to colour and flavour soups and stews. But in the apothecary, its value was much higher.
Roman and Greek physicians used the petals to treat a range of ailments, and it was a staple in the "simples" gardens of medieval monasteries. It was said that the flower followed the sun, opening at dawn and closing at dusk, earning it a reputation as a plant that carries the sun's revitalising energy.
The Science of the Sun: Nature’s Healing Flower
Today, modern research is finally catching up to traditional wisdom. Calendula isn't just a pretty flower; it's a biochemical powerhouse.
1. A Shield Against Time and Pollution
Calendula is rich in antioxidants like flavonoids and carotenoids. These act as a protective barrier, neutralising the free radicals caused by the harsh Australian sun and urban pollution that lead to premature ageing.
-
The Evidence: Studies demonstrate that Calendula significantly reduces oxidative damage, helping to maintain your skin’s integrity and a youthful, radiant glow (Suntar et al., 2017).
2. Deep Relief for Inflammatory Skin
Whether it’s eczema, dermatitis, a touch of sunburn, or general sensitivity, Calendula is a master at calming redness. Its gentle nature makes it safe for even the most reactive skin types.
-
The Evidence: Research published in Planta Medica reveals that its potent anti-inflammatory properties help reduce swelling and discomfort naturally, without the side effects of synthetic steroids (Preethi et al., 2009).
3. The Art of Tissue Repair
Calendula doesn't just soothe; it stimulates. It encourages the production of collagen—the scaffolding of our skin—which is critical for healing cuts, abrasions, and minor burns.
-
The Evidence: A 2010 study confirmed that Calendula extract accelerates wound healing by promoting the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) and reducing the appearance of scars (Saggini et al., 2010).
Calendula for Every Life Stage
Because it is so gentle, Calendula is a versatile staple for the whole family:
- For the Little Ones: Calendula is the gold standard for nappy rash and cradle cap. It provides a barrier that protects sensitive baby skin while encouraging healing.
- For the Gardeners & Makers: Working with your hands in the soil or the workshop can lead to "worker's hands"—dry, split cuticles and rough patches. A thick application of balm at night acts as an intensive repair mask.
- For Mature Skin: As our skin thins with age, it loses its ability to retain moisture. Calendula’s emollient properties help the skin hold onto hydration, restoring elasticity to dry elbows, knees, and shins.
How to Bring Calendula into Your Daily Rituals
For me, Calendula is a ritual that works from the inside out.
The Evening Foot Ritual
If you suffer from cracked heels as I did, don't wait for the pain to start. Once a week, soak your feet in warm water with our Ginger Herbal Soak, then massage a pea-sized amount of Calendula Balm into each heel. Slip on cotton socks and let the petals do their work while you sleep.
The Botanical Tea
I also find deep peace in a cup of Calendula tea. The petals are edible and carry a slightly bitter, earthy flavour that is incredibly grounding. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy its soothing properties while taking a moment to breathe and reset.
A Maker’s Tip for Clarity
If you are struggling with acne or maskne, try a "spot treatment" by mixing a tiny bit of Calendula Balm with a drop of Tea Tree oil. The Calendula reduces the angry redness of the blemish while the Tea Tree addresses the bacteria.
Why We Believe in Restraint
At The Australian Olive Oil Soap, we believe that Calendula is a skincare essential that doesn't need to be buried in synthetic fillers. We use a high concentration of infused oil to ensure you get the full strength of the flower.
Thank you for exploring the magic of this plant with me. I truly believe it is nature's most generous gift to our skin.
Wishing you glowing, healthy skin,
Amy xo
