How to Use Castile Olive Oil Soap

How to Use Castile Olive Oil Soap

A mindful, everyday approach to face, body, and hair care.

A Return to Simple Care

In a world of complex chemicals and synthetic foams, Castile soap is a breath of fresh air. It’s an old-fashioned cleanser made from the most honest ingredients. At TheAOOS, our Castile bar is pure simplicity: just Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil, natural spring water, and time.

No coconut oil, no hidden fragrances, and absolutely no nasties. Because it’s a traditional soap, it works differently from modern detergents. It doesn’t strip; it respects. Here is how to weave this gentle ritual into your day.

What Sets a Castile Bar Apart?

Castile soap isn't your average supermarket "beauty bar." It’s a bit of a different beast:

  • The Purest Base: Traditionally crafted almost entirely from olive oil through the slow process of saponification. No palm oil, no fillers.
  • The "Cream," Not the Foam: It produces a soft, silky lather rather than a mountain of synthetic bubbles.
  • Kind to the Barrier: It cleanses thoroughly without stripping away the natural oils your skin worked so hard to produce.
  • The "No-Nasties" Guarantee: Completely free from synthetic detergents, foaming agents, and harsh additives.

Because it’s so gentle, it doesn't behave like a chemical detergent. That’s why how you use it matters much more than how much you use. A little goes a long way when you take it slow.

1. For the Face: A Calming Start

Best for: Dry, mature, or reactive skin that feels "tight" after washing.

  • The Method: Splash your face with lukewarm water. Rub the bar between your palms to create a light, silky "milk" rather than a heavy foam. Massage gently into the skin using circular motions—keep it away from the eyes, as traditional soap can sting.
  • The Finish: Rinse thoroughly and pat (don’t rub) dry with a soft towel.
  • Why it works: Our oil is rich in squalene and antioxidants. It cleanses without disrupting your skin’s natural oil barrier, leaving you feeling soft, not stripped.

2. For the Body: Gentle Brilliance

Best for: All skin types, especially those prone to "winter itch" or dryness.

  • The Method: Hop in a lukewarm shower (piping hot water is the enemy of dry skin!). Lather the soap in your hands or on a soft washcloth. You don’t need big bubbles to get a deep clean—the creamy lather is doing the work.
  • The Finish: Smooth it over your skin with a light touch, rinse well, and follow up with a bit of our Balm or Body Oil while your skin is still damp.

3. For the Hair: The "Hair Ritual"

Can you use it as a shampoo? Yes—but it’s a different experience than a commercial bottle.

  • Who it’s for: Best for normal to oily hair or those looking for a minimalist, plastic-free routine.
  • The Process: Get your hair soaking wet. Lather the bar in your hands and massage only into the scalp. Rinse exceptionally well.
  • The Secret Step: Always follow with a diluted Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) rinse (1 tbsp ACV to 1 cup water). This rebalances your hair’s pH and flattens the cuticle for shine.
  • The Adjustment: If you’re coming off silicone-based shampoos, your hair might feel "waxy" for a few weeks as it detours. Give it time—it’s just your scalp finding its natural rhythm again.

4. For Sensitive & Eczema-Prone Skin

Castile soap isn’t a cure, but it is a "low-irritation" ally.

  • The Rule: Use it only where needed. If you’re having a flare-up, keep the wash quick and the water cool. Sometimes, the kindest thing you can do for angry skin is to do less. If a patch is broken or weeping, skip the soap and just use plain water until it heals.

5. Around the Home: The Honest All-Rounder

Because our formula is so pure, it’s a "fair-dinkum" multitasker for a low-waste home.

  • Hands: Perfect for the kitchen bench—it won't dry your hands out even if you wash them twenty times a day.
  • Dishes & Produce: A small amount of lather is great for hand-washing delicate dishes or rinsing the wax off orchard-fresh fruit and veg.

Making Your Bar Last

Our soap is "slow-cured," but it hates sitting in a puddle.

  • High and Dry: Use a slatted wooden soap dish so the air can get underneath the bar.
  • Airflow: Don't tuck it away in a dark, damp corner. It needs to breathe between rituals.

What to Expect

Don't expect the "squeaky clean" (which is actually the sound of stripped skin) or a perfume-heavy bathroom. Instead, look for:

  • A calm, comfortable skin feel.
  • Less reliance on heavy moisturisers.
  • A simple, fragrance-free moment of peace.

Our Philosophy:

Cleansing should support the skin, not challenge it. If this soap feels right for you, use it gently. If it doesn't, that’s okay too. Real care should never feel forced.
