When winter arrives, skin often feels it first. The air becomes drier, showers get a little hotter, and suddenly the skin that felt fine a few weeks ago starts to feel tight, rough, or uncomfortable. It’s not something unusual—just the season asking for a slightly different kind of care. Over time, I’ve found that it’s not about doing more, but about doing things more gently and more consistently.
One of the most helpful shifts is choosing a gentler cleanser. In colder weather, the skin doesn’t need to be stripped clean, and a harsh soap can leave it feeling even drier. A simple, mild bar—especially one made with plenty of olive oil—leaves you feeling clean without that uncomfortable, tight sensation. It also helps to keep your showers warm rather than steaming hot; as much as we love the heat in winter, hot water can take away more moisture than we realise.
To really keep the hydration in, try moisturising while your skin is still slightly damp. Applying an oil or a rich balm right after the shower helps to lock in that water before it has a chance to evaporate. In fact, winter skin is often hungrier than usual, so don't be afraid to moisturise again and again throughout the day. Applying a bit of extra care two or three times to those stubborn dry spots can make a world of difference.
It’s also important to keep ingredients simple. When the skin feels sensitive, it usually responds best to familiar things like calendula, oats, or goat milk. If you do feel the need to exfoliate, do it gently. A soft scrub with ground oats or poppy seeds once a week is plenty to clear away dry flakes without scratching the skin. This allows your moisturiser to sink in much more effectively.
Don't forget the smaller details, like keeping a natural lip balm handy. The skin on our lips is so thin and easily cracked by the wind, so a little protection before you head outside or go to bed is essential. Adding a weekly soak to your routine can also help; a handful of salts or herbs in a warm bath is a lovely way to soften the skin and take a quiet moment for yourself.
Protecting your skin from the outside is just as important as hydrating from the inside. Even when you don’t feel particularly thirsty, keeping up with your water intake—perhaps through warm herbal teas—helps your skin stay plump and resilient. Ultimately, winter care is about staying consistent rather than being aggressive. A simple, honest routine, done regularly, always seems to work better than trying too many different things at once. Just listen to what your skin is telling you each day, and adjust as you go.
In short,
- Wash Gently: Use a mild, olive oil-based soap that cleanses without stripping away your natural oils.
- Watch the Temperature: Stick to warm showers; steaming hot water is a fast way to dry out your skin.
- Timing is Everything: Apply your oils or balms while your skin is still damp from the shower to lock in maximum hydration.
- Layer Up: Don't be afraid to moisturise two or three times a day, especially on those extra dry patches.
- Protect Your Lips: Keep a natural lip balm close by to shield that thin, delicate skin from the wind.
- Exfoliate with Care: Once a week is plenty. Use soft, natural textures like ground oats to buff away flakes gently.
- Hydrate from Within: Keep the water or herbal tea flowing to help your skin stay resilient from the inside out.
-
Be Consistent: A simple, daily routine is much more effective than a heavy, one-off treatment.
Stay warm, stay healthy.
