Why I Ditch Commercial Soap for Calm Skin: Amy’s Story

Why I Ditch Commercial Soap for Calm Skin: Amy’s Story

From Itchy Winters to Calm Skin

For over a decade, my relationship with winter was defined by a single, exhausting word: misery.

It always started the same way—a creeping, restless itch behind my knees that spread like wildfire down my thighs and settled stubbornly around my ankles. I would scratch until I bled, leaving angry red marks that lingered long after the flare-up had passed. Year after year, as the temperature dropped, my skin would "panic."

The advice from doctors was always consistent: "Stay away from soap." At the time, I was baffled. Soap was for cleaning, wasn't it? How could the very thing meant to keep me hygienic be the source of my suffering?

It took me a long time to realise they weren't talking about all soap. They were talking about the modern, mass-produced "cleansing bars" that dominate our supermarket aisles.

The Great Detergent Deception

What I didn't know back then was that most conventional bars aren't actually soap at all—they are synthetic detergents. They are industrially formulated to be "efficient."

They rely on Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) to create a mountain of bubbles, chemical hardeners to ensure the bar lasts forever, and synthetic "fragrance" (a single word that can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals). While SLS is brilliant at stripping grease off a dinner plate, it is devastatingly effective at stripping away the vital lipids that protect our human skin. For someone with already stressed winter skin, it’s like washing with a harsh degreaser. It doesn't just clean; it dismantles your skin's natural defences.

The Turning Point: A Return to Basics

Ten years ago, out of pure frustration, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I stepped away from the plastic bottles and the "bright white" bars. I started making my own soap using only traditional oils, lye, and water.

I stripped everything back. No synthetic lather boosters, no artificial dyes, and absolutely no "perfume." Just the honest, golden weight of Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

I didn't expect a miracle. I expected a clean bar of soap. But slowly, something remarkable shifted. My skin stopped "screaming." One winter passed without the unbearable itching. Then another. The marks faded, the chronic redness disappeared, and for the first time in my adult life, my skin felt balanced.

The "Simple" Evolution

Eventually, this philosophy moved to my hair. I stopped reaching for the complex, chemical-heavy bottles and switched to a handmade Olive Oil bar. My hair didn't feel artificially slick or "plastic-shiny" like it did with silicone-based conditioners; it just felt like my hair—healthy, strong, and honest.

Even on those busy Australian mornings when I’m in a rush and forget to apply my body balm after a shower, my skin no longer feels parched. It stays comfortable. By removing the unnecessary, I gave my skin the "breathing room" it needed to function on its own.

Choosing to Thrive, Not Just Cope

I have a deep respect for pharmacy-grade, soap-free washes—they are vital tools for many people in the middle of a crisis. But for me, they always felt "neutral." My skin coped with them, but it didn't thrive.

When I switched to traditional soap made with oils, my skin actually recognised everything changed. This wasn't about following a "clean beauty" trend; it was a personal necessity.

Our bars at TheAOOS are a reflection of that journey. They aren't flashy, and they aren't over-marketed. They are simply an honest return to a better way of washing. Because sometimes, the most profound changes come from the simplest choices.
